Case Study: Burwood Compost Plant
Burwood Compost Plant & Containment of Leachates. SDIs can also be used for more than treated sewage. The Christchurch City Council operated Burwood Compost Plant is driven by the need to contain leachates. This is contaminated water that needs to be treated on site or re-used to prevent it from leaching into surrounding areas. To achieve this Parkland has installed an SDI system using Wasteflow® drip tube to recycle this water.
- 90 hectares with landfill covering 60 hectares • Subsurface system installed and supplied by Parkland
- Leachate is transferred from a 32 metre-deep bore into a 25,000 litre tank
- Leachate is pumped through large sand media filters and distributed through 8,400 meters of subsurface Geoflow drip lines
- The drip line has a bacterial lining which effectively treats the waste water and disperses it over 3 blocks
- Twin-dosing chemical injection pump to control leachate
